All about the Tour of 5 Supramontes.

The Tour of Five Supramontes is a three-days adventure through a legendary territory that is at the same time harsh and lushy, where contrasts are generated by water, rock and the inescapable passing of time.

Starting from Iloghe, on the plateau of Gollei, the tour enters the Supramonte of Dorgali from its western side. It continues west, crossing the Supramonte of Oliena and reaching finally the Supramonte of Orgosolo, homeland of a thousand legends and historical hideout of bandits.

The tour starts again in the hearth of Supramonte moving from the primary forest of Montes to the vast rocky stretches on the solitary and unpolluted territory of Urzulei. The rocks formations are a prelude to the lunar landscapes of eastern Supramonte, which scarred by the renowned road “Orientale Sarda”. The road leads to the pass Genna Silana, nestled between the Gorroppu gorge and and the canyon Codula di Luna.

On the last day the tour moves to the sea, offering two alternative itineraries. The first option leads to the beach Cala Luna, returning to Orosei by boat and a last cycle on the flat roads to Sos Alinos. The second option points directly to Cala Gonone, following the coastline on long panoramic roads and shady forests.

    Istructions

In order to complete this tour and fully enjoy its itinerary and views it is necessary to have a reasonable training. The assisted pedal system provides a great help, but the bike is not a moped, pedaling and stability are essential. Daily distances and vertical gains are somehow consistent and do not require excessive physical efforts. Anyhow, it must be clear that you will be sitting on a saddle and pedalling for at least 4 or 5 hours each day for three days. The itinerary runs mostly on medium difficulty dirt tracks. These are not very rough and only sometime on rocks or pebbles. Thus you don’t need pro skills but a good MTB manoeuvring ability.

    1. Day 1 Agriturismo Iloghe – Orgosolo

      47 km – 1.050 m vertical gain

This tour starts near Orosei, at the basaltic plateau of Gollei, proof of recent (geologically speaking) volcanic events; Following an intricate and beautiful net of off-road tracks it explores the countryside of Dorgali, passing under the massive crags of Supramonte to reach the town of Oliena and pedalling toward Orgosolo, an area still incredibly isolated and wild, theatre of many legends and home of bandits and heroic figures.

    2. Day 2 Orgosolo – Genna Silana

      50 km – 1.050 m vertical gain

After a night in Orgosolo, the tour continues on dirt tracks through hills and thick forest, visiting primary European Holm oak woods, populated with numerous centuries-old specimens. The paths can get very demanding but the panorama of the stony lands of the Supramonte are incredibly worthy the sweat. After a short panoramic stretch on the trunk road Orientale Sarda, the day ends at the pass of Genna Silana, located between the canyon Gorrupu and the Codula di Luna

    3. Day 3 Genna Silana - Sos Alinos

Based on the conditions of the sea, on your preferences and on the group’s needs, we can choose between two different itineraries that will take us back to Sos Alinos.

Option A (Via Cala Luna) 53km – 600m vertical gain

Can you imagine a better way to conclude such an intense trip? A long unpaved road with breath-taking views of the sea, the inebriating scents of the Mediterranean Scrub and, finally, a plunge on Cala Luna, one of the most beautiful beaches in the island. Here we will load our bikes on a boat that will bring us back to Orosei. Other 20 completely flat kilometres on the saddle and we will arrive in Sos Alinos, where the tour started.

Option B (Via Cala Gonone) 54km –850m vertical gain

If the conditions of the sea do not allow it, or if you fear the descent to Cala Luna, at times demanding, you can decide to reach Cala Gonone along a magnificent and scenic road, cross the pine forests of Su Petrosu and Su Barone following the coast until reaching the arrival point.
